How To: Replacing H-Base Screws on an Eames Shell Chair

A fine companion piece to my post on How To: Replace Plastic Chair Foot on Eames for Herman Miller Shell Chairs.

In the great move of 2015 few things were lost or broken. But one of those things gone MIA includes the screws used to attach my Eames shell chairs to their H-bases. After some website consultation and a half hour of trying out screws inside the local hardware store, it is been determined that the best replacements are 1/4-28 X 1/2 machine screws (i.e., 1/4″ diameter, 28 thread, 1/2″ long). These chairs happen to be fine threaded, but a coarse threaded chair would likely use 1/4-20 X 1/2 screws. Similar, just wider-spaced threading.

If you do not have any original screws to base your estimate from, you can do as I did and take your chair to the hardware store. Try out screws, but do not force them (you do not want to destroy the threading in the hole). Pick the screw that twists in the easiest, without being too small.

We originally ran this post in 2011 – but a good refresher is always in order! Here are the essentials:

All real Eames chairs are made in plywood, with cherry, walnut, santos palisander or rosewood veneers.

A real Eames Lounge Chair will have a five-legged base, and the Ottoman will have four legs. The bases should be die-cast.

The cushions for the ottoman and seat cushions for the chair should be the exact same size, and the leather should be soft.

The armrests should be slightly curved, not flat, and should have a separate piece of leather wrapped around the edge.

Finally, all originals do not have any visible screws or bolts, and should have natural rubber shock mounts and adjustable stainless steel glides.

Eames Knockoff Lounge Chair & Ottoman – SOLD

WOW! What a cool, collector s item chair!
Eames was a really famous furniture designer and this knockoff chair by George Mulhauser for Plycraft is from the early 1960s.
This chair was made with molded plywood.
It is in good condition, except there are a few minor knicks in the vinyl, and the wood was painted black.

The base section of the chairs consisting of the wire frame and wooden legs come already pre assembled. All you have to do (in theory) to finish off the chairs is to bolt the plastic seat to the metal base using the supplied tools and fittings.

To do this four silicone bungs first have to be removed from the holes on the underside of the plastic seat bases. When you do this, place the chair upside down on another chair or table as the bungs also secure large black plastic washers around the mounting holes that fall off (or rather fly off) when the bungs are removed and they are needed for assembly.
